As I wrap up my internship at Heineken, reflecting on the last two and a half months as part of the Trade Marketing team, I realize how transformative this journey has been. My time here, pursuing a Commercial Planning Internship, has been overwhelmingly rewarding, offering countless opportunities for personal and professional growth. It’s been such a positive experience that I feel compelled to share the key lessons I’ve learned.
One of the most important things I did early on was to set clear goals for my internship. From day one, I created a roadmap of what I wanted to achieve and shared it with my team. This clarity not only helped me stay focused but also made it easier for my managers to assign valuable projects. By doing this, I was able to avoid mundane tasks like filing papers or fetching coffee and instead contributed meaningfully to the team.
Tip: Define your goals early and communicate them to your team for a more purposeful internship experience.
Being an intern doesn’t mean you need to know everything. One of the most important lessons I learned was to ask questions when needed. Seeking help shows your curiosity and willingness to learn. It’s far better to ask for guidance than to make assumptions and miss the mark.
Tip: Don’t let pride get in the way—ask questions and learn from those with more experience.
Take the time to understand the company culture, its products, and how it operates. Showing genuine interest not only helps you learn more but also demonstrates your commitment to the team and its success.
Companies value employees who can solve problems, not just point them out. During my internship, I made it a point to address challenges head-on and offer solutions, rather than simply complaining. This proactive approach helped me stand out.
Tip: Being a problem solver is a skill that will make you invaluable to any company.
Throughout my internship, I took on tasks beyond my job description. By exceeding expectations, I was given opportunities to work outside my department, which allowed me to experience new aspects of the business. This even led to perks like travelling to different parts of Jamaica, staying in top hotels, and attending exciting events.
Tip: Don’t just meet expectations—exceed them. You’ll be rewarded in ways you never anticipated.
Networking isn’t just about connecting with senior executives; it’s about building relationships with everyone—from the receptionist to the Managing Director. This soft skill has been incredibly valuable in developing my leadership abilities. By understanding and appreciating everyone’s role, I was able to draw influence and insights from all walks of life.
Tip: Leadership is about influence, and influence comes from building meaningful relationships with everyone around you.
A big part of working in any organization is learning to appreciate and leverage the diversity of your colleagues. Everyone brings something unique to the table, whether it’s a different perspective or a fresh idea. Embracing this diversity can inject energy into the workplace and spark creativity.
Tip: Adapt to your environment, but always stay true to who you are. Learning from others doesn’t mean losing sight of your values.
This may seem trivial, but taking care of your body is essential. A solid breakfast gave me the energy and focus I needed to tackle the day’s challenges.
Tip: Treat your body like the temple it is—fuel it properly every day.
Lastly, remember that your internship is just one part of your personal growth. Invest in yourself outside of work by learning new skills, building healthy habits, and developing hobbies that make you a well-rounded individual.
Tip: The work you put into yourself will reflect in your professional life.
