Penwood High school has a long and rich history. In 1963 lands were donated by a cattle former and a religious man Mr. Simmonds to erect a building to operate a school for children in the Olympic Gardens area. 

Construction started in 1964 and the doors of the school were opened in September 1965. The then principal was Edward Dinall. At that time the total enrollment was comprised of 24 teachers and 983 students.
